Pupils at Sgoil a’ Bhac have the opportunity to learn to play a range of brass instruments including trumpet, trombone, cornet, horn, euphorium and participate in the Back School Band. Once they have reached a certain level of proficiency there is an opportunity for them to join the Junior Concert Band, the Nicolson School Band and the Stornoway Concert Band. Weekly tuition is also available for those interested in playing the fiddle and the chanter. The pupils compete in the annual Western Isles Young Musicians competition held in November each year.
Pupils with these talents are encouraged to play in folk groups which perform at local events and Mòds.
